Ammonia in new tank

I have just converted my 75 gallon non-planted tank to a planted tank using fluorite as the substrate. I have an Eheim Pro II running which was used for the previous fish, so I have bacteria on the media. I have added fish, some have died...no plants yet, was waiting for my CO2 and plants to arrive. Checked the tank yesterday...3 deaths. Checked ammonia levels and are starting to climb as well as the pH which is almost 8.0. Added Tetra Safe start 3 times to add bacteria (don't know if this actually works). The plants have arrived and are in a container with my 2x65 bulbs on them.
How do I reduce the ammonia levels? (I added ammo pellets to Eheim)
Should I plant the tank? (lfs said to wait)
How long will the plants live outside of the tank w/o Co2 but using the light?

Put the plants in the tank, I'm hoping you have some stem plants... I would suggest Water Sprite.

Put them in the tank, provided they are not on that non-aquatic list. If they are on that non-aquatic list, i'm afraid they will only add to your ammonia problems...

I purchased all of the plants on line at Aquarium Plants .com. All are aquatic plants. Some of the plants have very tiny roots though.

That's where I got my original plants from.

It's okay that they have tiny roots. Once you get them in your tank and hook up that Co2, that will be the least of your concerns. Your next concern would be ferts, but I would hold off on that until your ammonia reads at 0ppm. One thing at a time.
