Proper Dosing Help

Hello All!

Trying to wrap my head around a fert schedule and could use some help from some experts!
Right now I am dosing double-dose of excel daily to try to rid the start of some hair algae, but I know I need to get my fert/light/co2 aligned to keep it at bay long-term.

I have Seachem N, P, K & Flourish.

I have a 6g fluval edge with injected co2, drop checker, purigen instead of carbon in the filter, and a 25w heater.

LIGHTING: ( I'm getting about 40PAR to my plants.)
- Fluval 5-watt stock LED upgrade taken from the larger 12gal edge
-3 x 10-inch Finnex FugeRay Aquarium LED Light Plus Moonlights (4 watts each):

LIVESTOCK: (minimal for now)
3 RCS, 2 amano, 1 oto

PLANTS/SCENERY:
Driftwood, 10 or so Patches of HC (trying to carpet), single patch of dwarf four leaf clover, Golden Lloydiella, Lobelia Cardinalis & Anubias nana barteri

What is a safe schedule to be dosing the NPK/Flourish? I know Macros and micros shouldn't be on the same day, and I know they should each be dosed multiple times during the week, but I could use some help! Trying to get a nice, lush HC carpet!

Does a schedule like this work? (excluding excel)

S: flourish
M: N,P,K
T: flourish
W: N,P,K
T:
F: flourish
S: N,P,K

My tank:

PS: ignore the fact that the drop checker is bright blue, I had JUST installed it before that photo.

Your schedule looks just fine. Often times it is 2-3 times alternating micros and macros for six days then on the seventh day a water change. If I'm not mistaken excel is to be dosed everyday. The amounts of each I don't know, I would just go off what the bottle suggests; I dose dry ferts in a solution mixed by me.

Best,
Nate

Thanks Nate!

I don't know if I plan on using excel forever since I have plenty of injected co2, but at least for now I am double-dosing it daily to remove hair algae.

Do you think it's beneficial to use daily in conjunction with pressurized co2?

I really think not, the pressurized co2 is much easier for your plants to utilize. I must have misread that you were only using it to remove algae, sorry.

Best,
Nate

Thank you. There is a lot to learn in this hobby!

I've had the tank running for about a month now and haven't done a water change yet. It's been strictly planted for 3 weeks while it was cycling (or so i thought). Still have a a debatable 0 reading on nitrates. (those test strips are damn near impossible to discern between the lowest values, just ordered the API master test with the liquid.)

Should I perform a water change soon or wait until I have a more solid reading? Maybe the Purigen slowed down my cycle. Also, there isn't much of a bioload right now. (3 RCS, 2 amano, 1 oto)

I would start water changes as soon as you set up a tank; it is best to start with a couple per week for a while then gradually slow up to one a week.

Best,
Nate

Sounds good. Will change out tonight. Thought that maybe the purigen and/or plants may have been keeping it in check given the low bioload, and it may not be as necessary at the moment since my levels were good.

The schedule looks fine but what amount will you be dosing of each?

The recommended (beginner) dosage formula on the back of the bottles, altered to fit my parameters (6 gallon). Is there a different formula I should use?

FOR FLUVAL EDGE 6 GALLON:

phosphorus: .75ml
nitrogen: .37ml
potassium: 1ml

flourish: .5ml

Last edited by sl3xx; 03-13-2015 at 10:17 PM. Reason: added dosages
