Bananas = Potassium

I got the dumbest idea ever: If I feed my fish banana and onions (both an excellent source of potassium) will it increase the potassium in the water, in a form that plants can use?

My barbs actually do eat banana.

Hey wait a minute, I don't feed them bananas a lot, do they get defficiency or something if you don't?

What if I feed them a lot of it?

Eh I am better off buying fertilizer in that case... Thanks anyways.

If you feed the fish more potassium than it needs, the extra potassium will be filtered out by the kidneys and secreted as waste, but the level of potassium in bananas is low compared to ferts, and would be miniscule when excreted by the fish, not enough to provide the plants with nutrients

the amount of K in bananas is minimal. You have to consume it to get the K.

A lot of fish love bananas.

I'd think it should work in a low tech tank.

Hey there is a few more foods higher than that... I searched the internet. There is tomato paste and sweet potatoes with even more potassium!

(sweet potatoes are repulsive IMO)

Apparently avocado is one of the best. It's high fat would make it good for fish's growth too perhaps. I am probably not going to feed them avocado either.

I found out peas have 434 mg / 160 grams. I will stick with peas. It will keep my tinfoil from eating my java fern hopefully if I offer them plenty of peas. It tastes better to them so it will discourage it.
