Why is my gh so much lower than my kh?

I use mostly RO with enough tap water to bring it up to temp. I use an API hardness test kit and my kh runs around 6 but my gh is at most 1.

My well water is quite hard so I soften it with KCl.

Other parameters for my planted 20 gallon tank are:

PH is 6.8
CO2 added
65 watt Coralife fixture

First question:
I almost always see gh higher than kh. Why is that not the case with my aquarium?

Next, I'm about to start EI. Does this really matter and if so how should I compensate?

Thanks!

If you are softening the water you are only removing GH - the kH stays in.

As long as you are mixing the same amount of tap in each time you will have stable conditions as far as kH. You might want to supplement the GH so the plants have a minimum amount of Ca and Mg for growth. One easy way to do this is to use the UNsoftened well water instead of the softened - mix with RO to a reasonable GH and KH.
