Best root tabs

What does everyone recommend for root tabs?

Right now I'm using aquariumplants.com Total and Iron.

Not the cheapest though.

I [and the rooted plants] like DIY. I used this method although it wasn't as messy as advertised.

Most people use Osmocote+ for DIY root tabs. Ive personally had very good success with it.

Wal-mart is the only place that stocks it in my area. Home Depot/lowes only have the regular Osmocote, not the plus. The Plus includes all the micros (traces + iron) So you want to be sure and get that version.

A common method is to buy some blank gel-caps and fill them with the fertilizer balls. You can also make them using ice cubes. Just put the balls in ice tray compartments and fill about halfway up with water. Freeze then presto, instant root tabs.

How often does the Osmocote need to be refreshed?

Ive seen people say renew them every 3 months. In my experience they last a lot longer than that, 4-5 months at least, probably 6 max.

Lowe's used to carry osmocote plus and decided not to carry it. I picked up a large bag for 9.99 on clearance, same price as the small ones. Cha-ching.

When setting up a tank you can scatter the Osmocote on the floor of the tank then cover it with the substrate. High tech: about 1 pellet per square inch. Low tech: a lot less.

Cool....I prepare some small ice cubes with Osmocote Plus tonight.

I put 5-6 pellets per ice cubes....and I plan to put an ice cube every 3-4 inches..it should be ok....

"High tech: about 1 pellet per square inch. " .....where that calculation came from ?
