Water changes

A fellow member pointed me here to read up on dosing fertz, which i have. The one thing i have a question on is water changes. I keep reading that a 50% water change needs to be done per week. I have been under the impression that only a 25% needs to be done for freshwater. Is it different with planted tanks?

No set amount is correct.

Non-planted tank: Monitor the NO3 and do enough water changes (volume and frequency) to keep the NO3 no higher than 20 ppm.

Planted tank: Depends on the fertilizer program, but if you are following the EI method, then it calls for 50% once a week.
If you modify that, you may be just fine with smaller water changes.

Walstad style tanks generally get much smaller water changes, infrequently.

Can't go wrong with a weekly 50% assuming your source water is somewhat normal.. not everything is detectable by standard liquid test kits..
