Seachem Iron

I'm getting my head around iron dosing as I morph from Seachem type ferts to EI.
On the Seachem Flourish Iron bottle it states 2 things:

Quote:
"Flourish Iron is a highly concentrated (10,000mg/L) ferrous iron (Fe2+) gluconate supplement."
Quote:
"Guaranteed analysis:
Iron (Fe)...... 1.0%
1.0% Water Soluble Iron (Fe)
Derived from: Ferrous Gluconate"
My question is - is it 1% iron, or 1% iron gluconate ??

As stated is ought to be Fe = 1%.
If it were 1% gluconate, then you would need to know the molecular structure of the stated gluconate so that you can calculate the iron proportion in the molecule based on molecular weight of each element making the said molecule.

And of course 10,000mg/L = 1% assuming 1g of water is 1 ml.

That's right. Iron gluconate is only 12% iron by mass.

Confusion started by their other (slightly ambiguous) wording....

Quote:
DIRECTIONS: Use 1 capful (5mL) for each 200L (50 gallons*) or as required to maintain about 0.10mg/L iron.
My calculations say that 5mL of a 1% iron solution will give you 0.25mg/L iron in 200L....
If it were 1% iron gluconate the above dose would only achieve 0.03mg/L.....

Well, I just finished drinking a beer at 9% (by volume) and my head it spinning. Anyway, indeed it does create confusion. I guess you need to target .25mg/l if you want to maintain 0.1mg/l. I read that iron chelates don't last very long as it's rather unstable.
