Weekly dosing regimen?

Hello,

I have a couple planted tanks and would like to dose fertilizers a little better.

Unfortunately I travel a lot for work and am only regularly home on weekends. I am looking for a dosing regimen that is weekly, like after water change. I have eco complete soil with osmocote root tabs.

I understand daily is better but I'm just not around to do it.

Smile Once A-Week Seems Fine to Me, Then I Am A Known Heretic

Hi,

This may be heresy, but I think that once a week dosing is fine.

If it is “dry dosing,” altogether works especially for mature tanks, separating macronutrients and micronutrients by a couple of hours is probably technically correct. Liquid forms of macronutrients and micronutrients are require a couple hours separation.

Respectfully,
Joe

If your Guru tells you otherwise and you are true believer that is okay I will not argue the point.

I pretty much limit what I say to things that anyone can easily verify from recognized references or by direct observation. If it is my opinion I say so.

I use the common dry ferts + a couple extra for more TDS.
I dose all except KH2PO4 on the day I do the water change and the KH2PO4 on the next day...but...my fert level is lower than any EI requirements are.

The shortest distance between any two points is a straight line...in the opposite direction...

Is there a starting point for a 20 gallon and 75 gallon tank?

I have a heavily planted 20 gallon growout and am standing up a 75 gallon..

Do you already have an established dosing regimen for the 20 gallon? If so, just add up your weekly total and dose that.

If you don't already have an established regimen, well, start by reading up on popular ones like Estimative index (EI), EI low-light and Perpetual Preservation System Pro (PPS-pro). From there pick one that suits you, and use a calculator to establish the doses.

Then add up to a single weekly dose instead of daily or 2-4x weekly dosing.

To dose infrequently in a low tech tank I think having a higher quality substrate helps (dirt or equivalent+good base ferts). I can dose NPK in large amounts only once in 2 weeks (up to 30ppm NO3 at one go, after a water change), and with an Iron rich substrate, seem to have gotton away with not dosing Iron at all so far. Plant growth/color doesn't seem to mind.

About 2 months old tank

On the flip side, on high-light/CO2 tanks, I find dosing everyday makes a difference.
