Master Test Kit Shelf Life

Hi
I have a barely used API Freshwater Master Test Kit that's seven or eight years old.

Do any of you chemists out there have any idea if the chemicals are stable enough to use?.. Or should I play it safe and buy a new set.

Thanks

There should be an expiration date printed on the test kits themselves.

However, that being said, you can probably junk the test kits you have, since they are fairly old.

There are a few tests that might work, even beyond their expiration date, but better safe than sorry.

You make good sense. I'll order one today as I am about to start my first planted tank and am expecting a delivery today of most of the stuff I need.

Thanks,
Bill

One of the shorted lived tests is GH, and that one barely lasts 3 years. Most of the others you might get 4-5 years, but as suggested above, probably not good anymore.

You could try it with some calibrating solutions, see if any of them change color at all. (GH won't change color- that is how you know it has passed its 'use by' date)

Thanks for the good information. The new master test kit is in the mail and will arrive Tuesday. As an aside, I also ordered a replacement for my old stock of Amquel. The Prime is also due on Tuesday. Then I'll be close to having everything needed to starting a new tank. Maybe I should order some good luck and courage.
