What Is This?!?!?!

Here is the water that comes from the spigot, toilet and shower in Sumter, SC. I measured the TDS and it was 67, which isn't terrible. I just worry about what those solids are. I use RO but I can't believe that people actually drink this stuff. Can't possibly be good for you.

That is nasty! Does the water there always look like that? What does it smell like? I hope they plan on doing some work on the water system out there. I sure as hell wouldn't drink it.

It is for me. I'm on well water. Certain times of the year the sulphur content just explodes and it stinks to take a shower. Our water always has a yellowish tinge, though. Part of why I decided to always run Purigen in my fishtank filters.

We only drink RO/DI water.

I have well water as well, but out water never is discolored.

Occasionally, if the softener needs more salt, the water will start smelling like egg salad, but that's about all. I also have a low Ph for well water...about 8.0. Whereas my cousins, who live a mile from me, have a Ph of 8.3-8.4 from the tap.

We have a farm off the grid with well water and I have never seen anything like that. Maybe sulfur smelling sometimes, but brown?
Is it the iron content?
Or like Cole posted. Lack of up keep at the utility stations.

We were on well water when we lived out near you in Alachua- the water there is AMAZING- crystal clear and tastes awesome.

Nearer the coast though is a different story.

Oh its real alright... It comes and goes, some days its perfectly clear and some are, well... It doesn't smell like sulfur, though I am familiar with the smell you're referring to (I grew up with well water). This water actually smells like a swimming pool. When I run the shower its exactly like walking into an indoor pool. I run RO for my drinking water and my aquariums but I still have to shower in it (turns my white towels a brownish tinge) and wash my dishes in it. Other people here might not be able to afford a double RO unit to purify their water (nor should they have to). I hope nobody is drinking it, but I'm sure someone is.

Coleman- Awesome job with that report. I've been looking for something similar.

Yuck. If I were you I'd get a RO filter to put in the garage. Hefty investment, but if that's your water, seems like it would be worth it...

I had that happen to me in NYC... I think they were fixing water pipes at the time when that crud came out.. It's just sediment & pipe crud, I believe.
Let the water run for a while, and it should clear up.

How old is the plumbing in your house? Copper lines? Galvanized?

That's pretty burly looking
