Altering dosing schedule

I may be changing jobs, and the new one will require me to either give up my tank or figure out an alternative dosing schedule.

Currently I am using EI with weekly water changes. I have been doing those changes on Sunday, and alternate between micros and macros during the week, with Saturday as a day off. With the new job I will leave on Monday morning and won’t get home until Friday afternoon. Is there any way to load up the tank on Monday morning and have it last until Friday if I do those water changes on Saturday? I do have a CO2 system run by a Milwaukee controller and a timer so it doesn’t run at night. The lights are on timers. My wife will be home, but I would rather not leave her the job of daily dosing.

Ideally, you'd have two auto-dosers set to dose on opposite days but that would cost $150 or so to set up. I guess the main problem in your situation is having to dose both potassium phosphate (KH2PO4) and iron at the same time which is apparently bad. Maybe get one of those weekly pill containers and prepare the dosings for your wife? That way she just has to pop a lid for the corresponding day and dump it.

I agree, your best option is probably auto-dosing. I haven't done much research yet, but plan on setting one up in the future when I need a project to keep me busy...

As far as the meantime - I agree that perhaps making it very, very easy on your wife would be a good idea until you can get things better situated. I have tupperware in the cabinet, each one has a different nutrient with an appropriately sized measuring spoon inside. There's a dosing chart on the inside of the cabinet door and a mug i made in a ceramics class in college. If I'm gone and my GF has to dose the tank, she opens the door, reads what to dose and puts them in the cup. Then she goes over to the tank, dips in the cup and stirs it up before adding it back to the tank - it takes her less than 1 minute start to finish. She was skeptical at first, but now I'd venture to say she almost enjoys it!

Would it work if you sprinkled some time release Osmocote® Plus Smart-Release® Multipurpose Plant Food 15-9-12 into your aquarium before you left for 5 days? http://scottstraininginstitute.com/e...nt_food_08.pdf

It's a light brown BB sized pellet. That jug is about $15 at Home Depot.
