Confused by the Seachem dosing schedule

I'm wondering why Seachem doesn't have you dosing anything (other than Prime and pH stuff) on water change day? They have you dosing Flourish the day before and after a water change but no other day. I just don't understand the reason for that. I do about a 20% water change (they apparently suggest 5%) and then I usually dose a bigger dose of Excel and a dose of Flourish that day. And I dose Excel every day and Flourish again mid-week between water changes. I'm sure there's a good reason to do it the way they suggest, but I can't figure it out. Can anyone explain it?

What really confuses me about their dosing schedule is that they suggest you dose iron more than anything else(6 days per week at 5mL per 50 gallons). I thought NPK were the macros and were most important? Interestingly, they only suggest dosing NPK 2X per week each. Is iron really that important?

Iron is important, but I think the reason they have you dosing it every day is because it doesn't remain available in the water column all that long. The macros are much more stable in the water column, although I still prefer smaller daily doses of everything as opposed to once or twice a week doses.

I don't know the reason that Seachem lists it this way. I can just speculate. It may be because they only suggest a 5% water change and there could be enough NPK left in the aquarium to carry over a day.

If you are doing large water changes every week, you may want to add NPK on that day. I always did 50% water changes while following their dosing plan. A Seachem rep told me that the large water change was fine.

If this is working well for you, you may not want to change your regimen. Or, you may want to change it around some. I used their schedule for two years and it worked fine for me. Sometimes I would have to add some extra K to keep the pinholes away.

I wrote an Excel 2003 Seachem dosing calculator based on their chart shown below. There's a link to it in the following thread. If you get a chance, you might want to read all the posts. https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/ge...-medicine.html
