Difference between Phosphorus and Phosphate Parameter

Could somebody please explain the difference between testing for phosphorus and phosphate parameter. I have this colorimeter which tests for phosphorus but then I saw in Amazon that they have also this colorimeter for phosphate. Which one should I be using for planted tanks?

Also, is there a way to convert a phosphorus result into phosphate ?

Thanks for your help.

Id like a an answer as well. I use seachems phosph and i out of some knowledge i test with my api phosphate tester and try to keep it at .50 ppm max 1 ppm i do notice if i dose with phosphurous i do get a higher reading on my tester. So if i keep my feedings low and dont cause reason to get phosphate from Nything other then my fert dosing id believe it to be accurate enough. If this is a good method id like to know or not. ThNks mark

Hobby test kits, like the API test kits, measure nitrates and phosphates, not nitrogen and phosphorous. I believe all of the suggested levels for nutrient concentration are based on nitrate and phosphate.

after reviewing again the manual, i found that my meter can actually convert the phosphorus value into phosphate and it seems its multiplied roughly by 3. so the phosphate level in my tank is actually higher than my desired level. anybody can explain about this?
