Question Alkaline Buffer and Equilibrium

Hello Friends,

Due to past bad experiences with our tap water, I've always changed my tank water with distilled (only a ten gallon).

Somebody at my LFS mentioned that I should be using Seachem's Equilibrium with the distilled water. In the past, I haven't even been using stress-coat or the like on it.

What do you think? Should I be using Equilibrium? In addition, should I also be using an Alkaline buffer? I already use Seachem's Trace.

I have eco-complete substrate, and I thought that it was keeping everything in line just fine. gH = 5.5 degrees; kH = 3.5 degrees

Suggestions?

Thanks.

Seems fine to me. I would only change what you're doing if you are having bad results.

You'll have more consistent results with Equilibrium and Alkaline Buffer if you weigh them out before dosing.

Equilibrium is made of chunks and powder. Using a spoon to measure it can give much variability between doses.

The Alkaline Buffer is a more consistent particles size, but I weigh it out too.

My scales only measure to one decimal place, but they are good enough for this use.

Your GH and KH parameters that you mentioned should work fine.

I weigh the Equilibrium dosing for all my tanks.

I have only one aquarium that I have to add Alkaline Buffer to. It's KH is near 0 because of too much peat moss in the substrate's bottom layer. I weigh it out before dosing.

Both of the products are very good, but weighing them out (instead of using spoons) before use gives more consistent results.

Don't fix what isn't broken. You do not need the alkaline buffer. Whether or not you need to add any Gh is something you should let the plants tell you. Your Kh is fine.

If it ain't broke--don't fix it.
