cant keep a constant temperature!!!!!!!!!

I have a 20 long that is filtered by a Fluval 204, anyway, I cannot keep a constant temperature, it changes very frequently. from 78 in the morning (with heating) to 88 in the hot afternoon (no heating). I have no money currently, is there anyway that I can DIY something to keep my tank at a constant 82 degrees?

Is the temperature fluctuation hurting anything? If not, why do you want to change it?

Float ice in a plastic bag in the afternoon. When you get the money, get a small fan and run it towards the tank. It will evaporate more, so you will have to keep an eye on that.

I do have a fan on the tank, but when I turn it on, the heater doesnt keep up and it gets too cold again. I want a temp of 80-82 becuase of Rams, pencilfish and Otos, a biotope.

set a timer for your lights during the day and guess what... plug your fans to that timer too... that's what i did with my tanks.

Maybe back the fan off the tank a bit. I am talking a small personal fan, not fans directly over the tank. Besides cooling your room down with A/C, or adding a chiller to the tank, I don't see too many other options.

My suggestion would be along those lines. FWIW, I find that one thing that helps me keep my tanks at a more stable temperature is a split photoperiod. If you run your lights 8 hours total, put your lights on a timer to come on for 4hours off for 2 hours and on for 4 hours again. This helps prevent algae, and will also allow a cooling period of two hours as the tank should not heat up as much with the 2 hour siesta.

hey people, is there a way to make my heater keep up with the fan? when I turn on the fan, the fan is high powered, so within 5-10 mins, the tank drops up to 4 degrees, and the heater cant keep up with that.

Yup, one on each side of the tank would probably help.
