Purigen (Does It Get Rid Of Nitrates?)

I know their website and on the bottle it says it gets rid of nitrite, ammon, and nitrates

But I've also heard that it doesn't do much to nitrates as well.

So, I just want to ask the question in specific here to see what you guys really think. I've been having lots of nitrate problems and I would like to use purigen to help me fight off nitrates. Will it do a good job?

(yes I know I have to find the source for the nitrates as well, just this question please, thank you)

What the heck lmao!

I just bought 250 ml of purigen and I put it in an aquaclear 70 sized bag and the purigen just sort of falls right through haha!

They're like small little eggs. What the heck I thought they were suppose to fit in these small bags. Now I have to dig through my mom's stuff to get to her stockings, AWKWARD! (My gf doesn't have any)

I read on another thread here that it doesn't get rid of nitrates as someone tested their tank and it still has nitrates after using Purigen. And this thread talks about Purigen only removing things that release ammonia, nitrate, and nitrates.

https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/eq...10-carbon.html

Also, I once put Purigen in a filter bag and then it blew all over my aquarium because the holes were too big =( I'm now using "The Bag" by Seachem.

This is the case, it prevents it but does not remove it. Try it after a water change

So I'm not the only one who had this happen to!

How do you use purigen? Its like a bunch of beads and when I put them in my mom's stockings they look like putty. Do I flatten it out or something or what?

shape it as needed to fit in your filter. I put mine inside of a disposeable filter bag. That way the large waste is filtered before the purigen filters the finer particles

Yeah I tried putting it in a normal media bag from aquaclear but the small balls just fall out.

It's like putty, its hard to keep its shape. When it hits water, the shape that I flatten it out to becomes all messed up again. Or is that normal?

It's nothing solid like carbon, its all mushy....

I actually have the purigen in the sotcking before I place it in the filter bag. It works out well for me.

So, it being mushy and out of shape is normal?

Is there size (thickness etc) that I have to watch out for for the shape?

What do you mean by mushy? It should be like a water balloon, unless you don't fill the sotcking and tie it off.

Yeah it does look like a water balloon, its just not as solid as carbon. Its like I'm holding mud.

I'm trying to put it vertically on an whisper filter HOB
