Is This Toxic?

https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/sw...-checkers.html

I have this and recently filled it up with the blue ph fluid (thats in the bottle). However, while trying to move it to get a better view so I can determine the color, it fell and flipped over. I originally filled it half way (as shown in the diagram) and 35% of it spilled into the water.

One person told me its not toxic, another person said it is.

So is it toxic and at what quantity does it become 100% neccessary to change the water ASAP?

You are only supposed to add a few drops to the rest of 4 dkh solution.

Huh?

I was told to just pour some into there, till it gets half way, turn it upside down and stick it in the aquarium.

Anything that could potentially be harmful makes it nessisary to do a WC in my book!

Did you use 4DKH and then add a few drops of the ph solution? Or did you just fill it up with ph soultion?

It is said on that link that i first gave, that the 4dkh is already included and premixed into the bottle.

If it is a premix, then you did right. I have never heard of it coming that way before.

Not sure if it is toxic. Adding any chemicals can be toxic depending on the levels. I would do a water change and add carbon to your filters. Try to get it out of there.

I don't think it should be toxic. Only a few drops of bromothymol blue are added to the 4 dkH solution, and then you are only take a few mL of that and putting that into your drop checker. The bromothymol blue that does make its way into your aquarium water would be infinitely diluted, but if it makes you feel better, you can do a water change.

I've had lots of BTB spill out into my 2.5g nano to no ill effect on my plants.

It doesn't really matter, as long as you don't have so much liquid it covers the hole of the inner tube. I usually fill mine up about halfway (I made my own DIY drop checker).

Do I position it on the other side of the CO2 diffuser? (my common sense is saying yes)

Where do you get more fluid when it runs out?

Thanks for all the answers!

I put the drop checker as far away from the diffuser as possible.

As for the reference solution, you can make your own 4 dkH reference solution, or there are several members that sell it, both in Canada and in the US. The 4 dkH reference solution is clear, and the indicator solution (bromothymol blue), is available in API's basic pH test kit (they use BTB as the pH indicator).

Thats weird, this morning when I checked on the drop checker, it was at green still.

I thought they were suppose to turn blue again? I just added the blue ph mix into the checker yesturday.

I turned off the CO2 at night (no airstone since I heard its not needed, even at night). Am I suppose to take out the drop checker or something or what?

Normally, the drop checker will turn blue when the CO2 levels drop again. If it stayed green, that means your CO2 levels are still relatively high. You'd be surprised how slowly CO2 diffuses into the atmosphere without sufficient agitation.
