Drop Checker Solution

I am running DIY CO2 in a 10 gal plant growout tank, (no fish.) I want to test the amount of CO2 in the tank. After browsing the forum, I think I have the general idea how a drop checker works. My questions are these: 1.) What is a "4DKH" solution, and 2.) What is a PH test solution? And 3.) Where do I get them.

Finally, after reading about drop checkers it looks to me that the drop checker is not measuring the amount of CO2 in the water directly, but is testing the PH levels. Is this correct, or am I way off base? (As sometimes happens! I'm old, give me a break.)

You are correct. A drop checker measures the ph of a solution that is 4dkh. The indicator is bromothymol blue. Api ph test kits use bromothymol blue so that is a source if you need one. A 4dkh solution is pure water aka distilled with a carbonate hardness of 4 degrees. There are formulas available to make your own or you can buy it premixed. I buy it premixed as it's way easier. Here is a photo of a drop checker to give you an idea of how it works. You can order the 4dkh solution online from green leaf aquarium and you can also get the solution and bromothymol blue all premixed so you just add it to your drop checker and your done. Hope this helps.
