Question Texas holey rock

I have this large piece I bought a couple of years ago. Never got around to putting it in the tank. I still have reservations about it.

Does anyone have any experience or use this? I know cichlid lovers use it alot. I bought it because I had a lot of snails at the time and NYC water is so soft their shells would erode.

Wonder how fast the water parameters would change. Is it gradual or fast??

Will it end up as a large paper weight or sculpture for my livingroom??

It is limestone. It ups hardness and ph. How much depends on size, your water etc. I find it insufficient for buffering ARLCichlids. Depending on what you want to do plants-wise, it may or may not be a problem. Obviously, soft water plants (rotalas, eiros, etc.) will be difficult if not impossible.

Why not just test it to see if it works with your setup? Test ph and kh before/after a week for example.

I personally would not use it unless the goal was to have hard pH ~8.2 water, which you could expect as worst case equilibrium. I think there are just too many variables, how much water, starting acidity, how much rock, etc, for anyone to give firm estimates.

I prefer to take a more calculated and I suppose you could say "scientific" approach and add powdered GH & KH supplements to reach the desired effect.
