Not impressed by water hardness (plus a question about CRS)

The test strips (I know, not very accurate) say that the water hardness is 80-85 ppm. Can someone convert this to degrees and if it's soft or hard?

I want to know how to get my water softer. I don't want to use an RO system since I'm only a teenager and can't afford it. And I want to spend as little money as possible.

And I also have a question about CRS. My pH stays stable at 6.8 (maybe fluctuate .1 sometimes), nitrites at 0, nitrates at 20-30, and hardness is described in the first paragraph. Can I keep CRS in these conditions? And will they interbreed with RCS?

I can't help you with the conversion, don't remember how, but I'm sure someone else will be able to.

RCS and CRS cannot interbreed.

You could add distilled water instead of RO, or see if your LFS can sell you RO water (many can, and often it's very cheap). Also, a pH of 6.8 is already on the acidic side; I'm not sure that you even need to get it any lower? (Did you read through the breeding CRS sticky in the Shrimp forum?)

I just read through it now Seems like I have most of the "requirements".

I did a 10% water change with distilled water...problem is that it's $1.59/gallon

To convert ppm to dH, multiply ppm x 0.056=dH

If you're set on going this route, you could maybe contact one of those companies that supply water for those little drinking stations in offices... I know for sure they're cheaper than $1.59/gal, at least. Delivered.
