Using a RO/DI filter is an absolute must in reef tanks. What are the applications in a freshwater tank? I'm thinking that the water here in Saint Paul, MN is too hard for angels (I've gotten 4 different pairs only to have them and only them die off, only to have all the rest of the tank live happily) If I were to strip the water, what would I have to add to it to make it hospitable??

Not sure if this is where your water comes from, but from: http://www.stpaul.gov/depts/water/CCR.pdf

Water coming out of the water plant there is 5.3 dkH which is about right for your angelfish.

Hey, that's pretty handy!

...I wish I knew why the angels keep dieing and nothing else.

Since I have a RODI for my reef tank, would it be a good idea to use this on my freshwater tanks as well??

You can still use it and add either Electro-Right (Aquarium Pharmaceuticals) or Freshwater Water Renewal (Aqueon). I have both and use them whenever I add RO filtered water to my tanks.
