I'm going to go ahead and assume that they have a common pleco because an LFS employee said it would be fine, and they either didn't or don't know that they can grow to 18"+. I'm sure they would not have this fish if they knew that the 22gal was not a good habitat for it.

I had the same issue a couple weeks ago. LFS recommended "Wonder Shell" and my water is now the clearest it has ever been. It took about 3 days to clear up but... man, it worked.
