Water question

If I mix RO soft water with my dechlorinated hard tap water 1:1, does that make it medium hardness?

No, but it may cut your hardness in half. Do you know what you tap gh/kh is?

No, all I know is the total hardness is 298 mg/l if that makes any sense, and that its almost in the very hard category, I think its why everything in my tank never does well, so I'm planning on changing it.

Assuming your doing your 50% or more weekly water changes & correct lighting, your plants should thrive with tap water

Going to R/O for soft water is more of a fish issue than a plant issue.

If you mix RO (total hardness 0mg/l) + tap water (total hardness 300 mg/l) in a 50/50 mix, then the total hardness will be 150 mg/l.
This is still pretty hard water.

Here is what I would do:

Research the fish and get test kits for GH (General Hardness) and KH (Carbonate Hardness, also called Alkalininty).

Blend RO + Tap water until the GH is right for the fish.
Make the KH about the same.

Oh I though plants did better in soft water, thanks I'll get myself a test kit.
