Chelated Iron 13% EDTA

I have been using Flourish Iron for a while now and wanted to switch to something less expensive so I decided to order some Chelated Iron 10% DTPA from aquarium fertilizer.com. Well they accidentally sent me Chelated Iron 13% EDTA instead. My question is if this type of Chelated Iron is safe to use and if I were to use a 500ml bottle and dose at 20ml what would be the mixture? Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Hi dinnese,

I like to make up my iron smaller amounts, so I follow the recommendations of Rex Grigg. Rex sells 10% chelated iron and these are his mixing and dosing instructions:

Chelated Iron
* Mix 35 grams of powder with 2 cups (473 ml of water).
* 1 ml of this solution will raise the iron level in 10 gallons of
water by 0.2 ppm.
* Suggested range for iron is 0.1-0.5 ppm

Since the iron you have is 13%, approximately 27 grams of the iron should give you an equivalent solution and dosing level of 1 ml per 10 gallons.

Hope this helps!

Hi dinnese,

1 teaspoon weighs approximately 5-7 grams depending on moisture content. Assuming 6 grams per teaspoon about 6 level teaspoons or 3 level tablespoons should be about right.
