Hydrogen Peroxide

Hi Folks,

One of the oracles of my local group (been keeping fish since before I was born and I wont see 50 again) has said that Hydrogen Peroxide does exactly the same thing as the chlorine\chemical removers we can buy at the LFS' and for a lot cheaper.

I just wondered if anyone else had any knowledge of this?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2, water with an extra atom of Oxygen. Do you think it will work?

It's an oxidizer, that's what it'll do.

The funny thing is that you might not know one way or another if it worked, depending non how much chlorine is in your local water. Some people get away with no dechlorinator. So he could just be lucky.

Interestingly enough, I found a couple articles on google that mentioned it could be used for that purpose, still... $30 will get me a 2L bottle of Prime that will last me 5 years dechlorinating the whole volume of my aquarium every week.

It's pretty simple to test: fill a bucket with water, test for chlorine, if you get a positive reading add your peroxide, test again, if it still shows the chlorine then it didn't work.

Where would I be able to buy it for that price?

Big Al's has it on sale right now for $29.69.

According to Seachem it has an indefinite shelf life.

Good choice. Sure beats paying $10 for a 250ml bottle at a local store, doesn't it?
