Ei and pps

Ok I'm new and trying to learn as much as fast as possible. I think I have the basics of the pps and ei ferts I just want some reassurances from the pros.

I have a 55g low tech set up. 48" sat+ fixture daily dosing of excel. Tank will be moderately planted favoring the lesser end.

My thoughts are to go with the ei dosing to take all the guesswork out of everything. I don't mind water changes weekly. I just feel based on my reading using ei requires less attention to knowing if my plants are getting what they need where with pps you still kind of need to adjust dosage based on how the plants respond.

If my understanding is correct how long will the $15 ei package from greenleaf last dosing for a 55g?
Do u just dump the ferts in the tank?
And other than excel are the ferts technically all I'll need?

Thanks for the input

I haven't been with just one tank for quite a while, but I would say 3-5 months. I just dose the powdered fert directly. No issue. You need to do at least 50% water changes when you do them.

That long? Wow it is much cheaper than flourish then.

1 lb of mono potassium phosphate lasts 15+ years, 1 lb of KNO3 will likely last 2-3 years, 1 lb of CSM+B probably 5-10 years.

You'll also need K2SO4 which I don't believe that site sells.

Excel is not a direct substitute for CO2 gas. For the fastest and thickest growth you'll need pressurized CO2.

You can dump the measured dose of dry chemical into your tank.

The ei pack at green leaf has all of that. So your saying $15 will last me years? That seems a little extreme.

Calculate the doses out for yourself. I use 0.8 grams of phosphate once or twice a week in my 90g tank, 1 gram of CSM+B per week, 12 grams K2SO4, and 10g KNO3. You'll use about half that depending on your dose. I forget how many grams there are in a pound (400ish) so calculate that out in terms of weeks and you'll have your answer.

The method they recommend is in tsp not oz so I couldn't really figure out the math.

Like Zapins said, It will last a 55 gallon a year at least. I have the same package with a pound of Iron thrown in. I calculated how long it would last on my 29 gallon given my dosage and its well over 2 years. I also add GH Booster and Baking soda since I use R/O water which needs to be remineralized.

converting measurements is and easy task with a calculator or Google.

Would I also need iron? Isn't that part of the package?

A separate packet of iron would be a good idea, you don't want to add high doses of CSM+B to your tank just to add iron. A good iron supplement is DPTA chelated iron.

You'd have to check the details on the package you are ordering, I'm sure they sell several different packages.

I would do about 1/3 rd EI for the routine using Excel, in place of CO2.

You can likely extend the water change to 2-3 week ranges, but doing them weekly is likely a better idea for most folks, till things are in good shape and you are fairly good with correcting issues with plants/algae etc.

I'd dose about 15mls a day of the Excel.
Look into generic equivalents also, Glutaraldehyde.

Tom Barr

Is this a typo? Do you recommend 15 mls a day for a 55 gallon tank? The Seachem recommendation is 5 mls a day - 1 mll per 10 gallons of water.

It's not extreme at all. What's extreme is paying for a sprinkle of what you have in a bottle of water not to mention the shipping cost of said water lol.
