Help with lowering pH

I have both apistogramma agassizzi and discrossus maculatus that both prefer acidic water in order to breed. My question is, how to lower pH? I know there are several ways, ranging from RO water to using peat moss in a filter, but what will help me the most?

I'm unable to get an RO unit cause I don't have the money for it, and I thought about it, but I want clear water instead of tannin leached water.

Any other ideas?

I was thinking of using distilled water, but I'm not sure if I can fill a tank full of just distilled water.

pH is not a stand alone value. The minerals in the water tell the pH what to do.

The fish want soft water, that is, low mineral levels. When the GH and KH tests show that the water is very soft the pH will usually be right.

Distilled and RO waters are essentially the same as far as aquarium use goes. You can buy a gallon of either in most grocery stores and run some tests. Blend some tap + RO (or distilled) and see what ratio gives you water that is the right GH and KH for the fish.

If your fish come from black water rivers then they may appreciate the organic acids from something like peat or Indian Almond Leaves. Unfortunately this means the aquarium water may be tinted. I know that activated carbon can remove the tint, but I do not know if it leaves the acids in the water that the fish seem to need. If you are seriously wanting to breed these fish you might have to put up with tinted water until the fry are old enough.
