I would keep a close eye on nitrites. In my experience the nitrite cycle isn't an instantaneous occurrence.
I used a 42 cu. in. sponge filter that had aged for 1 year and it still took 1 month for nitrates to show up. Then it took another 3 weeks for the nitrates to eat up the ammonia by the next day.
