Red Sea Drop Checker

I've been reading up on the forum regarding using a DC to measure co2 levels and seems the way to go and since I'll be adding lots of bogwood soon which might skew my ph measurements I picked up the Red Sea version. BUT, the instructions tell me to use aquarium water with the reagent, does this sound right to you? According to what I've been reading, I need to use water with a known KH value (4 or maybe 5).

You're right...4dKh reference solution is what you'll need.

I have no idea why those retail DC's tell you to fill it with tank water. That totally defeats the purpose and function of a DC. because if the kh of your tank water is 5 or 6 or up you will wind up dumping enough CO2 in your tank to kill the fish before the checker gives you a green reading.
for a DC to work properly it needs to have clean known kH regent.

Solution...

And you can have the joyce and pride to make your own solution (and record how to).
All that top by discovering in you a dormant scientist.

The only drawback: beware of misscalculation...
