water evaporation ?

hey guys ihave a 20 long that I fill to the lip of my aqua clear 30 every water change. but I notice that my water evaporates at a very high rate i believe. early im the week my water will evaporate until ican see the water line. ihave a 20 long standard tank that has the black canopy.

why does water evaporate fast? I even have a lid as well. are there any other preventative measure or ways to reduce such fast evaporation?

20 longs have a large surface area to volume ratio, which is good for gas exchange, but also speeds evaporation. Not a big deal.

The aquaclear speeds up evaporation too. The thin spillway that's exposed to air helps the gas exchange process too and provides a more dispersed waterflow pattern. You'll also notice that your evaporation rate will increase during the heating season when ambient humidity will generally be lower than in summer / spring. While a glass cover certainly slows it down, it can't stop it altogether.

Mine does too. I have a 20 long. It is in a hallway where a fan is blowing the air from the heater over the tank.
Lots of air movement above the tank = more evaporation.
In tank heater = warmer water, so it evaporates.
HOB filter = spillway, so it evaporates.
Glass lid, but I do not use the plastic strip that might cover the rear 2" of the tank.

Adding that plastic strip would slow the evaporation.
