High nitrates with RCS

I have really high nitrates and I don't know why. Regardless, should I do daily 50% water changes to get it down, even with the shrimp? They're red cherries so they're hardy but that's a lot of change. Any suggestions to lower?

Could be from overfeeding, not cleaning media for long periods of time, etc....When mine kept getting high, it was my media...I didn't clean it often enough since the bioload wasn't high enough..

I haven't fed the new shrimp yet, but I will do a good media rinse when I do the water change tonight.

Hmm. You're not dosing nitrates right? Assuming not, there must be a large amount of food left over causing such a spike. I'd say 50% twice a week if the shrimp don't care and don't respond to get it down. Then clean the filter and even replace the tubing if necessary. Gunk can still build up on the inside walls of those things.

Are you on well water or municipal? Do you filter it?
Nitrates can leach into groundwater if you are drawing from a well near agriculture.

Search NO3 test kits and standards. NO3 test kits can be way off, folks have long had issues and trouble with them.

I am here to announce that my nitrates are down! It was the filter cleaning that did it. Thanks everyone! Will make sure I rinse media monthly from now on.
