sodium thiosulfate crystals

Has anybody tried mixing your own water dechlorinater with this stuff. I seen it on youtube and wonder if anybody else tried it. He says he can mix a gallon of solution for around $4.

If it worked without a caveat, you'd see lots of people using it. The caveat here is that it removes chlorine only. Most of the nation's water supply uses chloramine, which is chlorine and ammonia combined, and it does not remove the latter. I wouldn't pursue it unless you can verify that your water company uses only chlorine. And even then they might switch on you one day without notification.
