How often do you fertilize your tanks?

I'm going to start a 55 gallon planted tank in the next month or so and I had a fertilizer question. So I've read that when you fertilize it's a good idea to do larger water changes to keep nutrient levels in check to prevent algae. My question is basically how often should you fertilize. Thanks.

It depends on what you are dosing.

So should I just be trying to keep a nutrient balance in the tank and let that determine how often I fertilize?

Like Texan said that would depend on what you're dosing.

It would also depend on if you're going low tech or high tech. I dose my low tech tank about once a month or when I think about it. High tech tanks need to be on a more steady schedule to combat algae outbreaks.

How often do you fertilize your tanks?

6 days a week on the main tank(sig pic)

But it depends on what kind of setup you have. I have a 10 gallon tank with plants that I don't fertilize, (no co2) and plants are fine.

It depends on light, co2, plant load/type etc...

My 55 gets dosed 6 days a week, my low techs once maybe twice a week, my moss growing bins one drop of flourish every 4-5 days

All tanks get at least a 20-30% once a week

You haven't told us what kind of lighting you have, using co2?, what plants, etc..
Without that information it is pretty hard to give you an idea of what to dose and how often.

From your initial post, I'd just like to remind you that it isn't fertilizers that cause algae... It an imbalance or lack of them that causes it.

Fertz don't cause algae, Too much light for too long, not enough CO2 for lighting being used is the boogey man.
Low tech ,no CO2 ,excel, glut, get weekly fertz for me at about 1/3 EI (estimative index)
