I really need my head examined! Here I am thinking my nitrates are high. Today I pulled out the instructions for the kit. It plainly says:
<To obtain the value for Nitrate-Nitrogen concentration in mg/l the value <obtained with the kit should be divided by 4.4.

I haven't been doing that! So instead of levels of 25 I have levels of less than 6.

No no no you were doing it right before. The value that you get by dividing (Nitrate-Nitrogen) isn't used much here, any recommended or reported values are just regular old Nitrate levels. So 25 ppm would probably what you have to deal with.

Just to make matters worse, most of the simple test are prone to false negative results. You many indeed have more than 25 mg/l in your tank! The good news, however, is that everybody uses the same sort of test kit. It's still better than being blind.

Not so accurate test kits

You probably should change your water once per week - maybe even more until you get your concentration down by one half. In the end, what you do and how your tank responds is more important than the numbers.
