dosing only KNO3

i just ordered greg watson ferts and only ordered

KNO3, KHPO4, CSM+B, and the Barr GH Booster.

I will be dosing a 20g high with a coralife 65w CF fixture and pressurized co2.
The tank will contain dwarf pufferfish(relatively dirty fish).
Will i be able to get away without dosing K2SO4? I believe i read on the barrreport that you could but do i just does the other ferts the same quantity as one normally would for EI?

I don't dose any other source of K except KNO3 and KH2PO4, and it works fine. The amount of K being dosed isn't critical.

im a n00b to the planted tank but just ordered some ferts from greg watson (great money saver!)

I have a 20gal. tank with 2 x 65W lighting, currently only running one. and a diy co2. my ferts should arrive in the mail tomorrow and then i am going to add one more diy co2 cannister to pump into the same ladder.

As of now my tank is looking pretty green with algae :/ but it was to be expected for how im running it now with such high light, little co2 and no ferts. Hopefully that changes soon.

hey ret maybe start a new thread of your own...it is good etiquette not to hijack....

As for the Potassium...IMO you have to dose both K2SO4 AND KNO3...the postassium in KNO3 and the PO4 is meant as a binder of sorts, it isn't enough for plant needs if you have a large plant mass.

If you want to simplify things, might I suggest you just dose the K2SO4 in one bolus at water change...then dose your other stuff normally throughout the week until your next water change. That will assure that you have enough K+.

For my 90 gal, I put in a tsp of K2SO4 right after I do a water change. Then I am done with it and just dose the rest of the things throughout the week.

interesting.

Seems like this topic is a bit divided. Do you think i my tank will suffer from no K2SO4? and or is there a way i can obtain it without ordering from gregwatson because i don't feel the need to pay another 10 dollars for shipping for 1 item.

I've gone back and for with extra K dosing. If you want to wait it out a bit, a typical sign of K deficiency is pinholes in older leaves. I first noticed it on my Anubias nana leaves...which tend to last a good long time.

As you'll find with most things in this hobby, different things work for different folks ,

I used to dose KNo3, K2So4 and KH2Po4 on macro days, but stopped dosing K2So4 and have noticed no difference. Plans are doing better, if anything. Those two and micros (Fluorish trace/iron or CSM+B) are all you really need. What is your kH/gH? Is you water under 2 or 3 degrees of hardness? If not, you probably don't need to raise it. My tap water is right around 4 and plants do great.

The balance is the key. No limiting nutrients. So yes, KNO3 will cover the nitrates. Still need PO4 over 1 ppm and traces as well. Many add some iron to supplement traces. Some dose K, some think OK without. I tend to dose K every once in a while as there is no known algae from high K2SO4. The E.I. method is the easiest dosing strategy to follow, but should be modified depending on plantload, fish, lighting, tank size etc.

you can use epson salts. it's MgSO4... You'll get the needed trace magnesium & sulfate. You can get it at drug stores or garden centers.

for potassium you might want KNO3. or some garden centers will sell KO2 (potash)

Sulfate of potash, sometimes sold at garden centers.
It's darn near impossible you need it if you dose KNO3, unless you have like 12 Full gown Discus in a 70 gal CO2 enriched tanks with 2.2 w/gal PC lighting tank and feed 2x a day a lot, not likely at all.

You need 4x the N to make K+ limiting than is supplied with KNO3.
So unless 75% of all the N for the plants comes from the tap or fish load, you do not need it.

KCl also works fine for a K+ source.

thanks tom, i'll start dosing without the additonal K2SO4. If i notice an issue, i'll just order it. I will only have 3-4 dwarf puffers in the 20g.
