I just bought a new Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Freshwater Master test kit and was annoyed to find that they got rid of the KH test to make room for a second bottle of ammonia test. Since I may be looking for a new all-in-one kit, what is the best one out there?

Like most All-in-one solutions there are no good ones IMHO. What you need for an established planted tank are pH, kH, gH, nitrate and phosphate. And I really like the Red Sea nitrate and phosphate test kits. And Red Sea AFAIK doesn't make a Master kit.

AP is starting to suck! Good thing you post this. When I need a new kit, I'll prolly go with single units.

wouldn't it be cool if there was like a little teststrip thingy that would test for all those parameters in one go...

Anyone ever use real RO water to make a couple of standard concentrations to test the accuracy of their kits? I tested something that was called RO water and decided it wasn't worth the effort. I'll keep looking.

I do not like RO b/c it wastes too much water. I think I'll have to adjust when I get into salt water tanks. I've read RO is the way to go.

If you get a meter to make measurements of pH or whatever, don't forget that you will need standards to calibrate the instrument. Otherwise, the results are meaningless.

Red Sea does make a master kit. I found it after a bit of searching. It has pH, GK, KH, ammonia, Iron, Chlorine, Nitrite, and CO2. Looks like about $30.

Great. And it's missing the nitrate and phosphate. And if you have the pH and kH you can figure out the CO2 and the iron test kit is worthless. You would still be better off buying just the kits you need.

If you want an electronic meter to measure just about any water parameters then what you want is the LaMotte Colorimeter, here's the link http://lamotte.com/pages/aqua/smart2.html Now all you need is around $1300 and you are set. $900 for the box and the rest for the test packs.

Yeah, I'll just pull that fat wad out of my sock. While I'm at it, would you like one, too?

Hey, if you are buying I'll take one. In fact I will even buy my own test packets for it.
