Just got a Master Test Kit.. some help..

I think some of these are kinda messed up. Can someone fill me in as to whats good/bad about my water?

20 gal. tall
pH- 6.8
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 0
Ammonia- 0
KH- 80
GH- 25

The nitrate and KH seem a little off to me.. ?? Also, anyone know my C02 level? I can't figure out the chart in the sticky..

Thing is, on the KH test kit (it was a strip, didn't have the normal kind) Half the color was 80 and half the color was 120. Which was it?

What is bad is the nitrate reading, if you are trying to grow plants. You need about 20 ppm nitrate as a fertilizer.

I wonder if your test kit is any good. I know those paper test strips are a very crude measurement, so I doubt your readings. KH of 4.5 degrees (80ppm) normally would mean GH of more than 25 ppm, by quite a bit. Do you have a water softener? If so, you need to get your tank water from the cold water tap only, assuming the softener is only on the hot water line, and it isn't always that way. Softened water isn't good for plants or fish, unless you use Potassium Chloride instead of Sodium Chloride in the softener.

Would the lack of nitrate be due to the fact the few fish I have in there don't poop all that much? I've actually never seen them poop.

The only ones that were strip were the GH and KH. I'll go try one again. BTW, I always use very cold water because my panda cories like to spawn in it.

Thanks for the help, I'll be back soon with the new reading.

The low nitrate is because the plants use it up rapidly, so you almost have to dose it unless you have low light, which slows down the plant growth considerably. How much light and how big a tank do you have? Fish poop provides plant nutrients, but not nearly enough for moderate or high light tanks. Big meat eaters like discus may be an exception to that.

Based on the readings, my tank is cycled, correct? It's been up for over a month now.

I have a 1x65 watt coralife 6700k over this 20 gallon tall. I dose only one plant fert.. iron chelate, basically. I can't afford anymore ferts right now. I have a Natural Gro CO2 system and I have 35 ppm in that department, based on the first whacky score I got in GH and KH. Even my HC pearls, but not for very long, probably a few hours after I dose and a waterchange.

How do I dose nitrate? Were there any other problems with the water?

P.S - just tested again and I got the same weird half yellow (80) half blue (120) with, after time, more blue. WTF??
