Will a fish that died during the day

cause a nitrite spike ?I went to work and upon coming home tonight my SAE had died so I figured I'd check for everything that I have test kits for and I found the ammonia at 0 ,nitrite at between . 5 and 1.0 ,and nitrates at 10ppm.

I don't have an answer to your question but do you know what killed the SAE?

As soon as the dead fish starts to rot it generates ammonia which converts to nitrite. An SAE is big enough to generate a lot too.
