I am trying a product called Zeolite as an alternative to carbon to remove toxins, etc. from the water column.I have 8 oz. of this suspended in a micron filter bag in the 55 gal tank.I had to rinse it a fair bit first to remove a lot of dust.I performed a 50 % water change first and then removed all carbon.Injecting co2 and firts as normal. Also dosing Excel at triple the recommended dose.I will be watching fish and plants very closely for the next 48 hours and testing water quality every 12 hours.Read about Zeolite here.

Simply, cost. While carbon has its place ie to remove medications,it is somewhat pricey.Perhaps people on well water or municipal supplies that have less than ideal water quality could use a safe lower cost alternative to carbon.I personally only use carbon as a peace of mind security blanket if you will.I sometimes wonder if I get too carried away with chemistry (as in dosing) and feel that the occasional "water scrub"may be in order.Water changes are best but what if your water is so so?
