Well that sucks

Woke up this morning to see most of my fish and shrimp dead. Overnight I for some reason had a nitrite spike(.5 mg/l), and lost about 10 shrimp, and 10 rasboras.Ammonia was still 0. I also had a very nasty film on the surface of the water. My otos and cories seemed unaffected. My last 2 rasboras are at the water surface, I don't know if they are eating the film or gasping for air. I did a 50% water change, cleaned up most of the film with a paper towel, and adjusted my spraybar to allow more surface agitation. I just added plants and fish last weekend, but I still don't know how this happened.

The nitrite spike, if that is what it was, sounds like you didn't have enough plants to use it up as fast as it appeared, and no bacterial colony in your filter and the tank to convert it to nitrate. Starting a new tank works best if the tank if jammed full of fast growing plants, just to avoid problems like this and to avoid algae blooms.

Those are all symptoms of low dissolved oxygen. You need to run an airstone, at least at night. (My opinion.)

Sorry to hear that Anthony...I think it could be a combo of both low o2 and not a high enough plant stock.
