I've got a quick question regarding my GH, which as the subject states is testing at 25dGH which to me seems awfully high. My KH is at at a decent 7dKH, so I'm not to worried about that. But as for the GH, what effects does this high of a level have on plants, if any? What about fish like tetras that supposedly prefer soft water? Will a water softener pillow work for this and is it cost effective/worth the trouble? Any side effects?

Thanks,

-Jeremiah

I grew in GH 25 for two years, no real problems... only two plants I can think of might care, E. stellata, R. wallichii... Glosso might be a little fussy also... Tom Barr also grew just fine in water like that... as for fish, they will live just fine... The softness is usually only needed for egg developmejnt if you intend to breed. But for a planted tank I would not waste the money on an RO. Buy Kasselmann's book instead! GH is Ca++ and Mg++ which are needed by plants (best to keep around 3-4GH/KH). Almost everything will adapat just fine, altho osmotic pressure will be a little different.
