Dead fish = NO3??

Do dead fish create NO#? I was wondering this because when you have a fish die in the tank would it be benificial to let it decompose in the tank? I figured this would feed the fish in the tank and feed the plants. I know this is something that wouldn't happen often but when it does is it ok (benificial) to leave the dead fish in the water column?

In a “real” ecosystem, dead fish = new nutrients = plant growth, which is the natural cycle. However, since your tank is a closed system, you should really remove dead carcasses from the tank. Dead fish my cause an outbreak of the disease that killed them in the first place, or they may create a disease from bacteria blooms that may infect other tank mates. Despite changing water to circumvent this, it’s ultimately not worth the inherent risks. It is never beneficial to leave dead fish in the aquarium.

You can in essence build enough nitrates (NO3) from dead vegetation too, but this should also be removed to prevent excess build up of that compound as well as others released. As you probably already know, dosing fertilizers and fish waste should be your number one contributors for No3.

And who really wants to watch a dead fishy compose! eeww! hehe. Although I am intrigued.

Best of Luck!
