Want to start CO2, but need help

Hi, I have a planted tank right now and I am in the process of building and gathering materials to start injecting CO2 with a DIY setup.

The problem I am having is getting a good reading on my KH and GH. The testing equipment I am using has huge increments and the reagent requires me to guess a certain tone of pink and blue. It is a Hagen test kit.

From the readings I got, the tank has 40ppm of GH and even less, < 20ppm of KH. Could these readings accurate, seeing as the city gets its water from a hardwater lake? What should the GH and KH be? I know I need a good buffer capacity in the tank if I am going to be adding CO2, but I don't really know what would be a suitable KH would be. And how do I change it....

I'd recommend the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals kH testkit. It's very easy to read as long as you can see the difference between blue and yellow, and very precise too... you can double the amount of water and get +- half degree accuracy.

Nobody will be able to tell you remotely what your tapwater and tankwater hardness is or should be.

What is the GH in your planted tanks? Do you do anything to your water to increase it or decrease it, if so why?

Me? No... I don't know.

I am looking at our outdated water report every year, and it reports Ca and Mg in good quantities and proportions, so I leave it alone.

A good kH kit is necessary if you want to know CO2 levels.
