What is Dosing? How do I do it?

See title.

I never really looked into dosing when I started my planted tank; but I now realize it can make a huge difference in good growth.

If you need more questions:

Where do I buy "dosing" materials?
What are these osmocaps? or some word like that...

THANKS

Dosing is essentially adding nutrients (fertilizers) to your aquarium so that the plants requirement for nutrients are met.

In general, there are three basic macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; NPK) that are dosed (there are other macronutrients as well). In addition to macronutrients are micronutrients (these are elements that plants require in smaller quantities, but are still essential).

You can buy commercially available fertilizers (i.e. Seachem, Tropica, etc), but they can be expensive. The cheapest option is to buy bulk chemicals that will supply the necessary nutrients (i.e. potassium nitrate for nitrogen, in the form of nitrates, etc).

These chemicals can often be purchased at hydroponics stores, and can also be purchased online.

In short, you will need

potassium nitrate
potassium monohydrogen phosphate
micronutrients mix (such as CSM+B)

You can also have other nutrients (depending on your water chemistry) such as calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate.
