Cheapest way to do basic ferts for a first timer

I don't do CO2, do do massive light but I find my plants a lot better when I dose usually seamchem flourish, seachem iron, seachem excel. I just mix all 3 with some DI water in a squirt bottle and smaller tanks get 1 big squirt, bigger tanks get 2 big squirts, shrimp tanks get a few drops just to help the floating riccia matt and flogbit. Obviously they chemicals are a bit expensive. I not growing any really fancy plants, some hydro variant with nice red tips, valls, and mosses, frogbit and riccia just floating in a nice big mat about 1/3 the size of a 20gal, but getting a bit yellow. I think thats from the light so I'm switching the 2x23w for 2x13 watts, should help.

Anyways, I'd like easy to mix from fairly common things, cheap to buy in bulk that will work, etc. I do use jobes root tabs from the dollar store that really seem to help as well but I know adding something to the water will help. I don't even plan on going co2, not looking for massive growth, just a cheap way to give plants some nutrients they may need and to be healthy and look nice.

20g platy, , 2 x 10g shrimp, 3 x 20g shrimp, 7.5g shrimp and 1 great dane/mastiff puppy.

Why not mix up a couple bottles of half-EI solution (using one of the calculators to determine the PPM you want) and start with maybe a squirt per week to see how things go? Could even start with less.

You're right that mixing your own will save you gobs and gobs of cash (relatively speaking, of course). And you can tweak your formula as needed.
