Not Dosing Fertilizers

So I'm trying to make sense of my buddies tank. He has a 29 gallon with the power compact retrofit kit and a paintball C02 setup. He does no fertilizing but the plants grow like weeds in there. He has to trim the tank down every month. I don't see any signs of nutrient difficencies at all. How is it that his plants grow like that without fertilizing?

Hello J...

Your friend is dosing carbon. All living things are made with high amounts of carbon. He's just giving the plant what it needs for healthy growth besides water and light.

This may be a stupid question but if he is able to accomplish this in his tank, is it possible to also do this in a larger tank? The purpose of dosing fertilizers is to increase the amount of nutrients to make them grow faster correct?

1. Depends on the TYPE of PLANT SPECIES

I can do this every time with Water sprite and Egeria.

2. Fish load might be heavy, well fed.

3. Sediments might have a fair amount of nutrients/soil etc.

4. Light is likely low.

Very doable with the right species of plants and lowish light as tom said.

I personally kept, water sprite, wisteria, anacharis, hygrophila, Java fern and java fern and java moss in fairly hard water with fairly heavy fish load for years. I had brisk growth and never fertilized.

However...

Ever sword, val, crypt, anubia would slowly wither and die

Aponegetons would live for a bit but would would never thrive.

After I started reading I assumed it was due to lack of micros and K but couldn't tell you to be sure.
