thoughts?

hello, i was going to get the following dry chems:
K2SO4 -potassium sulfate (i hear it can replace KNO3) - 2lb
KH2PO4 -mono potassium phosphate - 1lb
MGSO4 - magnesium sulfate - 1lb
and have it mixed 60-15-25 parts, with 1000 parts DI water...makes 15 liters of solution (and i would dose daily with 30ml (55 gallon tank), and would get 16 months out of it)
but i was told i have hard water, so should i skip the magnesium sulfate?
the reason i can't use KNO3 is because i am in canada, and can't import it safely.
i would be buying from here:
http://www.aquariumfertilizer.com/in...ditU=1&Regit=2
it would cost $33 ($8, $7, $3, $15 shipping)

i am wondering if the chemicals i chose, the mixture i chose, the dosage i chose and the site i chose would be good, or if there is something better for me to use.
also, where would be the best place for me to get CSM + B?

thanks

It will do no good to dose fertilizers heavily if you aren't including an adequate amount of nitrates too. You can buy calcium nitrate, as I recall. Can that be shipped to Canada? The calcium in it would be useful too unless you have very hard water.

i should get calcium nitrate instead of potassium sulfate, and i wouldn't need the magnesium would i, because it is just for raising the GH, but calcium nitrate does that also...
so i am left with:
CaNO3 -2lb's
KH2PO4 -1lb

and would mixing them at a 4-1 ratio be good (60 grams, 15 grams for example) or would you recommend something else?
i was also thinking of dosing every second day, alternating with CSM+B and on the seventh day doing a water change...
and KNO3 probably can be shipped, but with all the warnings sites have, i would rather not lol

Why not just order your ferts from Canadian Aquatics so you can get KNO3? (They also carry CSM+B and the rest.)

Yeah, their website is a little sketchy (okay, a lot sketchy) - but they are a solid retailer. I get all my plants and ferts from them.

The guy you actually want to contact about shipping rates is Patrick Tamkee ([email protected]). I forget how much shipping was for my last bunch of ferts and food - I think about $15.

When you use the "contact us" link on the site it emails the owner Charles Lam, but he'll just forward your email to Patrick since he handles all the ordering now (see previous comment re: sketchyness of website lol).

if i buy from multiple sites i would be afraid the shipping would be too much, if i buy from the same place they could package it together to save on shipping (i hope lol)

i contacted C aquatics, if they don't respond by friday, or if the total price would be too much i have alternatives...thanks for the link and info

i'm still up for other sites/people/information if anyone has any

Im not aware of any other sites in Canada, but from the US the options that I am aware of are:

Aquariumfertilizer.com
GreenLeafAquariums.com
I sell them as well.

i might be able to find somewhere to get urea
i only have a ph testing kit, and my ph was at 6.8 when i tested this morning...i bring a sample to my lfs and they test for me (they never tell me any numbers, just "everything looks good" or "your ammonia is high"..etc.)

may i ask what you would do with my parameters?

to confirm if it would be safe for you to use it in your water, i have no problem with it in my soft water with PH of 6.0<

the water i get is from lake ontario, and is hard water, i have no clue how hard... edit: i don't go to the lake...i mean, the region's water supply comes from the lake, gets "cleaned" and piped to my house, no chloramine, only chlorine
this is what i will probably purchase (still up for discussion though)
2 lbs CaNO3
1/2 lb KH2PO4
1/2 lb K2SO4
1lb CSM+B

everything will be mixed, other than the CSM+B, it gets dosed alone
would this supply the proper nutrients for my plants?

sorry for all the questions lol, I'm still in the learning phase of aquatics

no problem...anything to help a friend and his tank...and i kinda owed you for the plants you gave me...not like it cost me anything extra

also, about my question above...i ended up dosing:
4tsp KNO3
1tsp KH2PO4
2tsp K2SO4
into 126mL of water (in a bottle), and am dosing 10mL into my tank, every second day...
i also used 1tsp to make 16 doses of 1/16tsp (diluted into water as well) it is dosed alternating days as above, and a water change at the end of the week
is this proper, or should i modify my mixture for the next batch?
