RO and distilled water are almost the same. You will either need to add chemicals to the distilled water to make it "livable", or add it to your tap water in some proportion so as to make your tap water a little more conducive to your needs.
How large is your aquarium? I also thought RO water was expensive, about cents a gallon. For me that would be $14 per water change, once a week, thats $720 per year! If I bought the water per gallon. The RO filter cost was $200. I will have to replace membranes at $100, but in the long run, if you have no alternative, RO isn't too bad.
Distilled water I think around here goes for about the same price 80 cents per gallon jug. Figure out how much distilled or RO you would need per water change and then do the math!
Let us know what you decide to do!

I guess you would be producing RO constantly for those changes, huh Gareth! Unless you went for one of those huge 300GPD units!

I used to think that my tap water was way too hard, then I met a bunch of people online who had harder water and their fish were fine.

Umm, how big is your tank? At $0.25 per gallon, it can cost more than you think, and how hard is your water? Mine has a KH of almost 15, so don't complain yet!

I only use distilled to top off my tank after evaporation. My water is nomally 10 GH, 9 KH, but the GH began creeping up after several months.

I was told that it was probably due to my topping off using tap water in the course of water changes. Now, before changing water, I top off the tank with distilled to make up for evaporation, then change water. That missing 1/4 inch a week over 6 months adds up, even while I was doing 30 to 50% weekly water changes.

Hmmm, interesting, I know top offs were important in marine tanks, but I never thought about it in freshwwater tanks. A good piece of information!

I buy my R/O at the local grocery store. They have a machine that spits it out at $.25 a gallon. Provide your own jug. Now I have a friend who gets free water in his Apt. and he just got an R/O system.

My GH was about 25, and my KH was 20 out of the tap. I have a 29 gallon tank, I filled 20 gal tap, and the rest R/O. I do 30% weekly water changes, 15% R/O and 15% tap. Night before last, KH was 10 and GH was 15. Did a 30% water change yesterday all tap. I'll keep switching back and fourth to keep the levels constant.
