Cycling Questions~!

Hello everyone!

Just had a few questions about cycling for you guys. I've only ever cycled one tank in my life, and that was a little 2 gallon. Now I've moved up to an 8 gallon and I want to make sure I'm doing things correctly.

I cycled my first tank with fish flakes and tetra safestart, and that 2 gallon has been doing extremely well for the past year. Still have all my black bee shrimp.

Now that I've upgraded to an 8 gallon fluval ebi, I also upgraded the filter to an eheim 2211. It came with a whole bunch of media stuff, and I took out about half of the biomedia that I had in the 2 gallon and dropped it into the eheim to seed the filter. Now that biomedia was about enough to sit in the middle of the palm of my hand and I doubted the power of the bacteria so I threw in a bottle of tetra safestart, my lucky charm.

I threw in 4 whitecloud minnows and have been doing tests for a week and I have had no ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate readings. Also, the tank is planted with dwarf sag, cabomba, and marimo balls. So... in my opinion, it's heavily planted.

So, am I getting no readings because of all the plants and was the biomedia from my previous filter and tetra safestart enough to immediately kickstart the tank?

Since, from my understanding old filter media is immediate bacteria colony.

Should I watch out for something? Am I doing something wrong? Can I add my shrimp now? Because I can keep a close watch on water params daily anyway.

Thanks for any help!

it might be fine, but i'd watch it for another couple weeks at least. besides making sure it's cycled, this will build up biofilm for your shrimp.

Sounds like you started with a lot of bacteria, and they are only dying off if you do not feed them. Will you be removing the fish before you add the shrimp? Then you could add as many shrimp as would equal the waste produced by the fish.

What I would do:
Let it run to develop all the other microorganisms.
Add more Tetra Safe Start right before (the day before or as little as half an hour before) you add any more livestock. This will boost the nitrifying bacteria population so it is ready for more ammonia. Do not add it then wait too long, it will just start dying off again.
