Weird pH

My tap water's pH (Atlanta area) is very soft with a KH of 0-1 and a GH of 4-6; however, the pH is unusually high (7.6-8.2). At first I was told by someone on this forum that the people who run the water supply add things to the water to raise the pH, but after looking through other forums, my pH should really be 6.9-7.0. Can anyone confirm if my pH kit is giving the correct reading or not? I'm using the API Master Test Kit.

They raise they ph to prevent corrosion of the pipes, I believe. Have you tested aged water? Usually ph uppers don't last. Your are correct, your ph should be around 6.8-7.0.

They likely add lye to raise the pH.

Please ignore any spelling/grammatical errors. I'm swedish and sometimes I'm also drunk.

Call the water company and ask.

My tap water:
GH and KH are about 4-5 degrees, but the pH is in the upper 7s to low 8s.
